# Torre Mateu / La Miranda — modeling progress

Latest scene: [miranda_window_fields_v027.blend](miranda_window_fields_v027.blend).

This is an editable exterior reconstruction study from historical photographs and later published reconstruction studies. It is not yet a finished or measured reconstruction. Earlier scene versions are retained; start new work from v027 and save to a new version.

## Remaining work

**Visual comparison completed:** [COAC drawing versus intact photographs](../references/coac_photo_comparison.md). Pass 05 implements the clearer opening, screen and roof corrections. The drawing's shorter shaft has not replaced the photographed built configuration. Pass 08 adds a [layout and viewing-direction study](../references/pass08_layout_study.md), informed by later reconstruction drawings.

**Research update:** [Wikipedia review and model discrepancies](../references/wikipedia_model_review.md). That review describes v009. Roof treatment and several opening families have since been addressed. Pass 08 implements the multi-flight route and carriage portals as a documented reconstruction interpretation. Exact dimensions and historic scale remain unresolved.

1. Review the roof bell and eave thickness against the intact photographs, refine ceramic surface scale and edge treatment, and finish the upper gallery's diagonal screen-frame junctions. Pass 11 addresses the broader tower window brick fields and observatory shutter joinery.
2. Verify the inferred annex depth, balcony projection, final observatory doorway bay and overall height against better dimensional evidence. Small reconstruction-plan insets do not establish historical measurements.
3. Continue historical proportion checks as better evidence becomes available. Pass 09 reduces the upper enclosure's bulk and preserves a connected route; its precise L-shaped arrangement, highest parapet level and narrow visible garden-side edge remain interpretations. Cameras remain approximate inspection directions.
4. Refine local bond transitions and add weathering and varied lime coverage during final material work. The procedural stone placement and repeated brick-field boundaries remain cleaner than the historical surfaces.
5. Develop the gate, full boundary, windmill and site if continuing to reconstruct the wider setting.
6. Complete final material, lighting and presentation review after the geometry is settled, including a seamless backdrop for low perspective views.

## Assumptions to preserve

- Approximate overall height is 18.4 m after roof refinement; the earlier 18.63 m value belongs to the first blockout. Neither is a measured historical dimension.
- Rear elevations, exact plan dimensions, upper enclosure and railing patterns remain inferred. The broad multi-flight route is supported by the later reconstruction studies, not a measured as-built plan.
- Pass 08 replaces the earlier single-flight arrangement. Current terrace, balcony, turn and observatory levels are 4.10, 8.32, 10.01 and 11.70 m. Pass 07's local clearances describe v014, not the current scene.
- Pass 09 replaces the upper switchback with an L-shaped route and a compact final landing. The current route diagram and upper flight dimensions are in the Pass 09 notes; the Pass 08 upper arrangement is retained only in its earlier scene files.
- Material colors are plausible choices, not recovered from sepia photographs.
- The tower, lower enclosure and stair walls now have shallow real stone geometry. The wall assemblies retain editable profile and opening cuts; individual stone placement and added brick end returns are reconstruction choices.
- Broad curved brick fields now surround the tower windows. Seven observatory bays have paired shutter leaves with hinge parents and louver arrays; the northeast entrance remains open. Exact field boundaries, joinery dimensions and fittings are inferred.
- Keep openings, louver arrays, roof shell, displacement and bevels editable. Do not overwrite an earlier good scene.

The archive image appears to depict the same design as `pobles_130006.jpg`, with more of the sheet and clearer small details. It is additional visual information, not an independent second design. Its watermark is retained. The images are not camera-aligned; apparent widths and heights cannot be compared directly as measurements.

## Comparison and modeling decisions

| Feature | Drawing | Photographic evidence | Decision for the model |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Vertical arrangement | A compact shaft has one principal opening tier between the lower terrace and the upper window drum. | Two distinct shaft-window tiers appear below the upper drum in the intact overall views. | Preserve the built tower's additional tier. Do not shorten the shaft to reproduce this drawing. |
| Shaft profile | Pronounced outward flare toward the terrace. | The tall built shaft appears much more nearly cylindrical, with a local flare at its lower transition. | Use photographs to refine taper; the drawing's exaggerated flare is not a dimensional template. |
| Roof | Tall, comparatively pointed bell profile; no clearly legible oculi at this image scale. | A more compact rounded cap, circular oculi and overhanging curved eaves are visible. | Keep the photographic cap and openings. Do not infer that the built roof lacked oculi from the drawing. |
| Lower openings | Grouped windows have stepped/jagged brick outlines and narrow heads. | The largest intact photograph clearly shows stepped heads in the lower shaft tier and grouped ground-level windows. Upper shaft openings have a different, curved arch treatment. | Replace generic semicircular lower openings and surrounds; retain distinct families of opening shapes. |
| Upper window drum | Tall rectangular shutter panels beneath a separate, shorter screened tier. | The overall photograph shows tall shuttered bays and a shorter upper tier with patterned timber screens. | Retain the two-tier composition. Refine the upper screens: uniform horizontal louvers alone are insufficient. |
| Exterior stair | A prominent stepped parapet rises at the side, with another lower descending element on the opposite side of the composition. | Stair-side views show rounded parapet shoulders; the largest overall photograph also shows circulation on the other visible side. | The current single run does not establish the full route. Resolve the routes in plan and elevation before adding flights. Do not assume opposite-looking views show separate stairs without checking camera direction. |
| Balcony | The elevation does not fully explain the depth or corbel construction seen on the built balcony. | The dedicated close-up shows staggered brick courses, long projecting supports, narrow parapet slots and a patterned coping. | Use the close-up for the balcony. The model's evenly spaced simplified strips and plain coping still need correction. |
| Lower enclosure | An irregular composition of wall heights, stair edges, portal and gate pier. | The intact views show an articulated boundary and built base, not a single clean rounded box. | Revisit the provisional footprint and terrace outline. Do not mistake boundary walls for enclosed rooms. |
| Masonry | Stone outlines are drafting conventions, with exposed-brick areas distinguished by horizontal courses. | Irregular dark stones, light joints, brick fields and toothed brick-to-stone transitions vary across the facade. | The model's regular polygonal stones and almost uniform stone shaft are inaccurate simplifications. Map stone and brick regions before refining surface texture. |
| Fence and gate | Sagging net-like panels, curved piers and a shaped entrance assembly are clearly drawn. | The gate close-up corroborates linked mesh, shaped uprights and diagonal members. | These can guide future geometry. Neither view supplies reliable bar sections or full site dimensions. |

## Confidence and unresolved questions

High confidence: additional built shaft tier; stepped lower window heads; distinct upper screens; brick coping and corbels; irregular masonry; linked-mesh gate character.

Still unresolved: complete stair plan, rear openings, lower enclosure footprint, exact dimensions, precise roof finish and colors. The drawing cannot establish these by itself. The [Wikipedia review](wikipedia_model_review.md) supplies separate textual research leads; its reported dimensions and material descriptions are not measurements extracted from these images.

## Correction order

1. Establish photo-view directions and floor/landing levels on a simple plan and elevation. Locate the cited reconstruction drawings before asserting the hidden stair route.
2. Correct the lower opening profiles and distinguish the entrance, lower windows, upper shaft windows and observatory bays.
3. Rework the base, terraces and stair connections against the reconciled views.
4. Revise brick/stone regions, balcony brickwork, upper timber screens and roof covering.
5. Recheck scale using the reported height and any corroborating source, then render reference-matched perspective views as well as inspection views.

V009 remains unchanged. No corrected .blend scene is claimed by this comparison. Its existing detail should be treated as replaceable wherever it conflicts with the evidence above.

First blockout / v001–v002

scene/miranda_design_notes.md

# Torre Mateu / La Miranda — first blockout

## Reference review and plan

Reviewed all 28 supplied images in the three contact sheets, the README, and source metadata; inspected the principal intact views and the historical drawing individually. Intact photographs take precedence over the design drawing and damaged photographs. Modern relocated gates inform later ironwork only. Sepia does not establish original colors.

Prioritize the slender cylindrical shaft, two window levels, projecting enclosed upper drum, open gallery, bell roof with lobed eaves, and the asymmetric stair/balcony. Build separate editable meshes with retained Boolean and shell modifiers. Establish a four-angle clay review before secondary detail or material work.

## Scale and uncertainty

- Overall height 18.63 m; main shaft diameter approximately 4.2 m. These are working estimates, not survey measurements.
- Rear opening repetition, lower enclosure footprint, and exact staircase orientation are provisional.
- The drawing depicts a shorter tower than the intact photographs; its elevation is not copied literally.
- Windmill, gates, full boundary, adjacent buildings, brickwork, shutters, and roof oculi are deferred.

## First visual review

Version 001 was saved and rendered from street, stair, opposite, and elevated viewpoints. The first renders revealed reversed cutter normals that prevented the arches from reading correctly. Version 002 recalculates normals without applying modifiers and repeats all four renders. Version 001 and the pre-existing test scenes are retained.

The first blockout establishes overall height and stacked cylindrical masses. Remaining proportion work: the low enclosure should be less rectangular, stair parapet shoulders should form a flowing stepped profile, and balcony supports need better integration. The rear is a hypothesis. Materials and lighting are only a neutral inspection setup; no final reconstruction is claimed.

Pass 06 / landing correction

scene/miranda_pass06_notes.md

# Pass 06 — balcony landing and doorway transition

User-reported issue: the transition from the balcony landing to its doorway looked wrong. Starting scene: `miranda_evidence_v011.blend`.

## Diagnosis

Two dedicated v011 close-ups were rendered from above and from the stair approach. Geometry inspection confirmed that the axis-aligned connector only met part of the diagonally oriented doorway. Its minimum X/Y bounds were 1.425/1.350 m, while the doorway spans both sides of the diagonal through approximately (1.38, 1.38). The old connector was shaped around rectangle corners rather than the opening.

The landing top was 8.32 m; the doorway cutter began at 8.34 m, leaving a wall lip. The doorway surround also retained a projecting sill, and there was no internal floor behind it. The short return parapet stopped before reaching the tower.

## Local repair

- Replaced the connector with one continuous landing, threshold and circular internal floor mesh, all at 8.32 m.
- Extended the footprint through the full doorway width and embedded its interior perimeter into the tower wall thickness.
- Kept the last stair tread fully exposed and retained the 0.18 m final rise onto the landing.
- Lowered the doorway cutter's bottom to clear the walking surface; removed the disconnected sill component from the brick surround.
- Replaced the short parapet return with an angled return and coping that meet the tower beside the opening.

Doorway position, angle, width, the tower and the wider stair arrangement were retained. The internal floor and parapet return are a local construction interpretation, not a historically verified plan.

Four new inspection cameras show the repaired landing from above, the stair approach, the threshold and a wider context. Numeric checks sample a 0.80 m strip across the 0.88 m doorway and the approach route for continuous floor support. Results are recorded in `../renders/miranda_v012/landing_checks.json`.

## Visual review and verification

All four v012 renders were visually inspected. The overhead and approach views show a continuous walking surface spanning the diagonal opening, with the final tread exposed. The threshold close-up confirms removal of the window-like sill and wall lip. The wider view shows the return reaching the tower beside the opening without crossing the doorway. The interior floor now gives the entrance a continuous surface behind the threshold.

The floor sample checks and 0.18 m final-riser check passed. The saved scene was reopened successfully, and Boolean modifier operands were checked. Modifiers remain editable; prior scenes are preserved.

Reviewed deliverable: [miranda_landing_v012.blend](miranda_landing_v012.blend). Reproduction script: [miranda_landing_v012.py](../scripts/miranda_landing_v012.py). This pass resolves the local geometric transition. It does not establish the historical stair plan or validate the structure. The wider circulation and supporting construction still need reference-led development.

Pass 08 / circulation

scene/miranda_pass08_notes.md

# Pass 08 — complete exterior circulation and annex arrangement

Starting scene: `miranda_structure_v014.blend`. Working versions: v015–v018, all retained. Deliverable: [miranda_circulation_v018.blend](miranda_circulation_v018.blend). This remains an editable reconstruction study with inferred dimensions.

Status: circulation pass completed and reviewed. Historical proportion fitting remains as described below.

## Evidence and design decision

Located and visually inspected the later reconstruction images published by Fundación Antonio Gaudí, UPC ETSAV CAIRAT and M. Andruet. Five unmodified files, provenance and hashes are recorded in [the reference folder](../references/pass08_reconstruction/README.md). The Fundación sheet includes a small plan inset; the UPC sheet shows several elevations, a plan and a perspective. Their dimensions cannot be reliably read. The cited Sciortino thesis was searched for but not obtained or consulted.

Compared those interpretations with `pobles_130007.jpg`, `pobles_130011.jpg`, `vallesos_b-9cbd66f0.jpg`, `nacio_718172.jpg`, the balcony detail and the user-supplied COAC elevation. The result is documented in [the layout study](../references/pass08_layout_study.md), including a landmark/view-direction table and a diagram of the modeled route.

The single exterior flight in v014 omitted the ground approach and the final climb to the observatory. Simply mirroring that flight would not resolve the circulation. This pass replaces it with four flights around a corner-tower annex: one from ground to the first terrace, one to the balcony level, and two shorter return flights to the observatory. Twin carriage portals occupy another annex face. This arrangement is informed by the reconstruction studies; the dimensions, upper enclosure and precise entry bay remain interpretations.

## First implementation and review — v015

- Rebuilt the base as a hollow annex around the tower, with real carriage-door and grouped-window openings.
- Reoriented the retained balcony/portico assembly toward the garden side, correcting the previous tower/balcony/stair visual order.
- Introduced the ground approach, middle flight, upper return, connecting landings and plain editable iron guards.
- Raised the first terrace from 3.28 to 4.10 m to accommodate the ground approach and lower volume. Remapped the affected lower tower details while retaining the upper tower and roof height.
- Saved a separate scene and rendered garden, carriage-side, elevated route and plan views.

All four previews were inspected. The first upper return projected too far toward the balcony facade and looked unsupported. Door leaves had an incorrect transform. The lower portico lacked standing space, and the first-terrace arrival contained overlapping floor surfaces.

## Geometry corrections — v016 and v017

V016 moves the portico inward by 1.20 m, providing a usable porch; widens the outer annex and separates the middle flight from the upper circulation; rebuilds the carriage-door leaves; and places a more compact upper return behind the balcony with masonry support. The observatory approach joins a northeast opening, with a real cut through its sill/cornice and a continuous interior floor. The earlier southeast shutter assembly is restored.

Four more previews were inspected. Tests of individual treads and selected landings passed, but the plan and overview showed that a supporting wall still blocked the lateral connection from the middle landing to the upper stair. Individual landing checks were therefore insufficient.

V017 adds a true cross-passage under the final landing, cuts both the wall core and brick facing, and checks the complete connecting paths. It joins the ground arrival without overlapping coplanar faces, adds an inner retaining wall and handrail to the ground flight, aligns the tower's lower-window cutters with their surrounds, and adds brick courses to the upper turning wall. The garden camera is adjusted to test the historical landmark order more directly; it is still not a calibrated photographic match.

## Final review corrections — v018

The v017 overview revealed a thin floating strip above the ground flight. Pixel-to-geometry ray checks identified it as the first-terrace slab: the stairwell cutter stopped at Y=6.87 while the slab extended to Y=6.90. Extending that editable cutter removes the residual strip without changing the route.

The garden render also showed a black band at the bottom. Its low orthographic camera started some rays below the studio floor. Moving that camera backward along its own viewing axis preserves the composition and lets those rays reach the floor's upper face. This is a camera correction, not an image edit.

All four v018 renders were visually inspected. The garden view retains the revised landmark order with a continuous studio background; the carriage view shows correctly seated door leaves and the cross-passage; the overview confirms removal of the floating terrace strip; and the plan shows the ground flight, outer middle flight and compact upper return without the previous floor-overlap patch. The upper enclosure's bulk and the differing masonry treatments remain visible limitations, not resolved details.

## Current modeled levels and flights

All dimensions below describe the model, not recovered historical measurements. Each flight has one fewer separate tread than risers; the final rise reaches its landing.

| Flight | Levels, m | Risers | Rise, m | Tread pitch, m | Width, m |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A — ground to first terrace | 0.00 → 4.10 | 23 | 0.1783 | 0.24 | 1.42 |
| B — terrace to balcony | 4.10 → 8.32 | 24 | 0.1758 | 0.23 | 1.30 |
| C — inward upper flight | 8.32 → 10.01 | 10 | 0.1690 | 0.24 | 0.98 |
| D — upper return | 10.01 → 11.70 | 10 | 0.1690 | 0.24 | 0.98 |

The connected routes include the lower porch, middle arrival, balcony bypass, existing tower doorway, upper turning landing and observatory entrance. New construction is grouped in `12_Circulation_reconstruction`; operands are named in `90b_Circulation_cutters`. Individual treads, masonry assemblies, door leaves and curve-based guards remain editable. Opening and floor-union modifiers are retained.

## Verification

V017 sampled 693 points on seven connecting routes and 189 points across stair treads, using center and ±0.28 m lateral positions. Floor support and 2 m headroom checks passed. Horizontal obstruction rays at three body heights also passed along the flat connecting segments. See [complete path checks](../renders/miranda_v017/geometry_checks.json).

After the final cutter adjustment, v018 repeated 297 floor/headroom samples on the affected ground flight and first-terrace route, checked five positions for the residual slab strip, and verified that the formerly clipped garden ray hits the studio floor top. No issues were reported. See [final focused checks](../renders/miranda_v018/geometry_checks.json). These are sampled geometric checks, not a continuous collision proof, historical proof or regulatory assessment.

The final saved scene reopened successfully in Blender 5.2.2 LTS, and all 68 Boolean modifiers retained valid operands. Four final Cycles previews were rendered at 1100 × 1200 pixels and 48 samples. Earlier scene files were retained.

Each scene-building script refuses to overwrite its output scene.

## Remaining limitations and next work

The tower/balcony/middle-stair order is now coherent from the garden side, and the full modeled route connects. The upper enclosure still reads bulkier than the intact photographs suggest. Its silhouette, exact wall placement, final doorway bay, annex depth and guard pattern need further reference fitting. The inspection cameras establish approximate viewing directions, not photographic calibration.

The overall height remains approximately 18.4 m; the reported 17.5 m has not been reconciled with a measured source. The annex and stair-wall stonework still use a regular shader pattern that does not match the tower's real stone geometry. Materials and plain iron guards are provisional, and the full boundary, gate and site are absent. A focused upper-stair silhouette/proportion pass should precede the remaining masonry and final studio presentation work.

Pass 09 / upper stair

scene/miranda_pass09_notes.md

# Pass 09 — upper stair silhouette and doorway approaches

Starting scene: `miranda_circulation_v018.blend`. New versions: v019–v021, with earlier scenes retained. Deliverable: [miranda_upper_return_v021.blend](miranda_upper_return_v021.blend).

Status: completed and reviewed for this upper-stair refinement pass.

## Reference findings and scope

Reviewed the intact garden photographs, the opposite oblique view in `vallesos_b-9cbd66f0.jpg`, the smaller street views, and the later Fundación, UPC and Andruet reconstruction images already in the reference folder. The [upper stair reference study](../references/pass09_upper_stair_study.md) records the evidence and includes two ordinary photographic enlargements.

The garden photographs leave a clear area above the projecting balcony. The opposite oblique photograph reveals a tall brick stair mass close to the tower, with rounded coping shoulders. V018 instead placed the high end of its upper return away from the tower, requiring a long final landing and a broad enclosing wall that appeared above the balcony.

This pass keeps the two lower flights, balcony and floor levels, but reorganizes the upper pair into an L that finishes beside the existing northeast observatory entrance. The photographs support reducing the separate projecting mass; the exact L-shaped plan, rise counts and dimensions remain a modeling interpretation. No measured plan was recovered.

## First construction — v019

- Replaced the upper switchback and long final bridge with a westward flight across the rear, a corner landing, and a southward flight beside the tower.
- Rebuilt the bearing walls and individual brick facing around that route, with a real arched passage beneath its high end to retain the lower tower doorway approach.
- Created a compact observatory landing joined to the existing interior floor. An editable clearance cut keeps that slab off the final stair treads.
- Matched the lower cornice cut to the existing 1.27 m-wide observatory bay opening. Its old 1.00 m cut left a constriction on the new oblique approach.
- Adjusted the final upper flight to nine rises of approximately 0.188 m, creating enough standing space at the doorway. The corner and final landings were checked with the approach routes.

Early geometry checks caught a wall crossing the corner landing, a slab overlap above the last treads, and an oblique doorway approach that clipped the cornice and drum. These were corrected before saving v019. All four v019 renders were then inspected.

The garden view showed the broad enclosure removed, but a tall front edge still projected beside the drum. The plan exposed overlapping cap pieces at that corner, and the foot of the first upper flight left little room for the balcony bypass. The straight sloping coping also lacked the rounded shoulders visible in the references.

## Review corrections — v020

- Recessed the high front wall and landing edge by 0.65 m, reducing the remaining projecting strip while keeping the doorway route inside the landing.
- Shortened the first upper run by 0.12 m, retaining ten rises and using a 0.2267 m tread pitch. This gives the bypass more clearance at the foot of the flight.
- Rebuilt both upper bearing-wall profiles with two rounded descending shoulders and individual brick coping. These counts and curve dimensions are inferred from the construction character, not traced measurements.
- Joined the corner cap strips with a separate three-brick corner instead of overlapping them, and continued the front facing into the side-facing corner.
- Rebuilt the lower passage with a visible projecting brick surround, positioned clear of the front-wall return.

New work remains in `13_Upper_stair_refinement`; individual treads, brick assemblies, curve guards, floor unions and opening cutters remain editable. Materials and all four camera directions are retained so the comparison shows geometry changes.

## Final junction corrections — v021

The four v020 views were inspected. The high mass was substantially reduced and the L-shaped stair was clear in the overhead view. Two small junction problems remained: the perpendicular facing layers left an open strip at the front slab corner, and the high front cap extended inside the visible observatory reveal.

V021 wraps the corner with individual brick ends and a continuous recessed mortar backing, including the former slab-height gap. A retained Boolean trims the high return at the doorway jamb. The established route coordinates and camera directions are unchanged.

All four v021 previews were visually inspected. The garden view shows the reduced mass above the balcony; the carriage view shows the continuous brick corner and arched passage; the overhead view shows the compact final landing with the cap withdrawn from the observatory reveal; and the plan retains the L-shaped ascent without the earlier overlapping cap corner. The comparison uses the same garden camera and lighting as v018. Tight curved coping joints still merit close-up finish work during the masonry pass.

## Current upper route dimensions

| Element | Modeled dimensions |
| --- | --- |
| First upper flight C | 8.32 → 10.01 m; 10 rises × 0.169 m; 0.2267 m tread pitch; 0.98 m width |
| Corner landing | 1.20 × 1.10 m; top at 10.01 m |
| Final upper flight D | 10.01 → 11.70 m; 9 rises × 0.1878 m; 0.24 m tread pitch; 0.98 m width |
| Observatory floor | 11.70 m; compact landing beside the northeast opening |
| Lower passage | 1.08 m nominal width; 10.36 m arch spring with 0.20 m rise; connects the 8.32 m floor |

The two lower flights retain their Pass 08 dimensions. All values describe this model and are not historical measurements.

## Validation

Full route checks passed at 639 floor/headroom sample points along seven connecting routes and 186 points across stair treads. Horizontal obstruction rays at three body heights also passed along the connecting segments. The tests use a 0.56 m sample width and 2 m headroom. See [geometry_checks.json](../renders/miranda_v020/geometry_checks.json).

The balcony bypass received an additional 135 floor/headroom samples and obstruction checks using a 0.68 m width; these passed. See [bypass_clearance_checks.json](../renders/miranda_v020/bypass_clearance_checks.json). These are sampled geometry checks, not a continuous collision proof or a regulatory assessment.

After the final junction edits, v021 repeated 171 samples on the two tower approaches and their obstruction checks. Targeted rays verified the brick closure, the mortar backing between courses, and removal of the cap from three points inside the doorway reveal. These also passed; see [final junction checks](../renders/miranda_v021/geometry_checks.json).

The final scene reopened successfully in Blender 5.2.2 LTS with all 72 Boolean operands present. Final previews use Cycles at 1100 × 1200 pixels and 48 samples. The previous scenes are retained, including both intermediate Pass 09 versions.

## Remaining work

The broad upper block has been reduced and the ascent now terminates beside the tower. A narrow brick edge remains visible in the garden inspection angle; the camera is not a calibrated historical viewpoint. The precise original upper plan, guard pattern, highest parapet level, overall scale and rear construction still need stronger dimensional evidence.

The next useful pass is masonry: the annex and stair walls still have an overly regular shader pattern, while the tower uses real stone geometry. Bring these surfaces into agreement with the photographs, refine the brick/stone boundaries and preserve the now-connected circulation. Detailed joinery, roof finish, the broader site and final studio presentation remain later work.

# Pass 11 — window brick fields and shutter joinery

Starting scene: `miranda_masonry_v024.blend`. New versions: v025–v027. Earlier scenes remain intact. Deliverable: [miranda_window_fields_v027.blend](miranda_window_fields_v027.blend).

Status: completed and reviewed for this window-brickwork and joinery pass.

## Reference findings

Reviewed the intact oblique photograph `vallesos_b-9cbd66f0.jpg` and garden view `pobles_130007.jpg`, including ordinary enlargements of the window areas. The [window reference study](../references/pass11_window_study.md) records the observations and links the crops.

The lower shaft windows emerge from a broad continuous brick apron. At the upper shaft level, wider brick fields join the jambs to the band below the observatory, leaving tall stone panels between openings. Those upper heads are shallow arches. V024 instead had narrow isolated trim and semicircular upper window heads. The observatory shutters show distinct paired frames and upper/lower louver panels.

## First construction — v025

- Built individual curved brick courses around the lower apron and upper window fields. Retained profile operands define the stone/brick boundaries; a retained opening collection cuts the actual window voids through the fields.
- Cleared stone from the new brick regions and replaced the former shader-only band below the observatory with geometric brick courses.
- Changed seven upper shaft window cutters to shallow segmental heads, with matching wedge-shaped arch bricks, deeper jamb courses and projecting sills. The separate lower landing doorway and its surround retain their earlier shape and threshold.
- Rebuilt the seven closed observatory windows as paired shutter leaves. Each leaf has its own hinge parent, stiles, three rails, upper and lower louver arrays, and small iron fittings. Fixed casings and separate dark backings complete the assemblies.
- Used shallow heads for the observatory openings. The northeast bay remains the open entrance, with no shutter or new threshold across it. The upper gallery's diagonal screens are unchanged.

Four v025 views were rendered and inspected: garden, carriage side, shaft-window detail and shutter detail. The new regions agreed better with the photographs, but the brick joints appeared too deep and dark. The tangent-plane surrounds stood too far from the curved shaft. The shutter detail also exposed open space above the rectangular leaf frames.

## Review corrections — v026

Added thin lime-mortar backing surfaces approximately 5 mm behind the brick-field faces, using the same retained profile and opening cuts. Extended the field courses farther into the reveals. Curved the individual lower and upper surround bricks onto the tapered shaft, reducing their projection while retaining the projecting sills and the stepped lower opening profiles.

Added fixed curved timber heads above the seven closed shutter pairs and actual radial brick head courses above all eight observatory bays. A small horizontal latch bridges each shutter pair's meeting edge. The observatory entrance remains open, and the revised head and casings were checked against the existing approach route.

## Reveal correction — v027

The four v026 views were inspected. Brick joints and shutter heads improved, but the shaft-window detail showed distracting horizontal bright strips in the deep reveals. A [pixel-ray audit](../renders/pass11_study/reveal_pixel_audit.json) found that brick-jamb faces and structural-wall caps occupied the same planes: for example, both at local x = 0.330 m in one upper opening. This was overlapping geometry, not an intentional louver pattern.

Moved the brick return faces 4 mm into the opening, leaving the structural/mortar face behind them, and separated the stepped-head undersides and arch intrados by a few millimetres. The outer brick fields now use their own slightly narrower cutter copies. Structural and mortar cutters retain their dimensions; the separate landing doorway uses its original cutter. The slight facing offsets sit within construction-joint scale and remove coincident reveal surfaces.

V027 repeated the aperture, shutter-panel, profile and circulation checks before saving, with no reported issues.

All four final v027 views were visually inspected. The shaft-window close-up confirms continuous brick reveals and clean mortar joints without the former striping. The garden view shows the broad apron and upper fields within the overall composition; the carriage view retains the open doorway approaches; and the shutter close-up shows paired frames, inclined slats, fitted curved heads and small meeting latches. Both comparison sheets were also inspected. The regularity of the brick/stone boundaries and the unchanged upper-gallery screen junctions remain visible limitations.

## Validation

- **Tower opening layers:** 1,080 rays sample twenty tower openings at three heights and three lateral positions across six layers: tower shell, rubble, two brick fields and their mortar backings. No sampled obstruction was reported. See [window and joinery checks](../renders/miranda_v027/window_joinery_checks.json).
- **Shutters:** all 28 louver panels fit inside their leaf frames with the intended small seating overlap at the side stiles. There are seven pairs, fourteen editable hinge parents and twelve slats per panel. The arrays remain unapplied.
- **Profile operands:** both field-profile meshes have closed manifold edges.
- **Circulation:** all 639 connecting-route floor/headroom samples and 186 stair-tread samples passed, along with horizontal obstruction checks, using a sampled width of 0.56 m and headroom of 2 m. See [geometry checks](../renders/miranda_v027/geometry_checks.json).
- **Saved scene:** v027 reopened successfully in Blender 5.2.2 LTS, with all 112 Boolean operands present. Final previews use Cycles at 1100 × 1200 pixels and 48 samples. See [verification report](../renders/miranda_v027/verification.json).

These checks sample geometry; they are not a continuous collision proof or a historical dimensional survey. Window probes test the masonry layers, not the intentional shutter or recess backings.

The lower shaft surrounds keep their existing names and collection. Brick profile cuts, window cuts, bevels and louver arrays remain editable.

To pose a shutter, rotate its named `hinge pivot` parent around its local vertical axis; the default saved pose is closed. The fixed curved head, masonry and fixed casing are independent of the movable leaves.

## Remaining work

The photographs support the broader brick regions, shallow heads and paired shutters; they do not establish the exact boundary curves, arch rises, timber dimensions or small fittings used here. The repeated brick/stone boundaries remain more regular than the historic wall. Material colors and weathering are still interpretive.

The next useful pass is the roof and upper gallery: inspect the bell profile and eave thickness against the intact photographs, improve the ceramic surface scale and edge treatment, and finish the diagonal screen-frame junctions visible in the close-up. Preserve the completed window and circulation work while reviewing those details.

The overall height, annex depth, rear elevations and upper stair layout remain inferred. Wider site elements and a final material/lighting presentation pass are still outstanding.
